Cry Wolf
On saying it out loud while it still costs only your reputation. The New York Times reassured its readers in 1922 that Hitler's antisemitism was a tactic rather than a belief, and the same reasoning is being run today by everyone waiting for a final, unambiguous event before they will speak plainly about the American presidency. The essay's argument turns on a recursion ordinary caution ignores: waiting for stronger evidence only works if evidence keeps accumulating independently of the thing being judged, and that assumption fails the moment the process under suspicion starts disabling the institutions that would produce the evidence against it. A fabricated grievance, the belief it was built to spend, and what remains of the alliance, 2017 to 2026. The 2024 trade balance with Canada was 35.7 billion dollars and was described in public for over a year as exceeding 200 billion, a figure that turns into an American surplus of more than 63 billion dollars the moment a single commodity, oil, is set aside. The alliance version of the charge fares no better: the United States pays roughly sixteen percent of NATO's common budget because this administration's own government negotiated that figure in 2019 and put it in writing as favorable, and when the allies answered six years of the unpaid-bill claim by adding 139 billion dollars to their own defense spending in a single year, the complaint did not go away. Power, prosecution, and the death of the American republic. The essay's structural thesis is exact: the assault on American self-governance combines Julius Caesar's objective, personalist autocratic rule behind institutional forms preserved as empty vessels, with Adolf Hitler's method, epistemological destruction through the Big Lie, manufactured emergency through scapegoating, institutional capture on the Gleichschaltung model, and a cult of personality, driven by the same motive that carried Caesar across the Rubicon: the need for power as a shield against prosecution. Per-capita evidence, welfare analysis, and the anatomy of a manufactured grievance in U.S.–Canada trade.
